“Jimmy Carter was born October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia he was the 39th president of the United States. President Carter’s record as a diplomat and global philanthropist shows how he truly embodies the global mindset. Although the effectiveness of Jimmy Carter as president can be debated, his commitment to creating a better world cannot. As president, Jimmy Carter was essential in the success of the Camp David accords, which helped to create peace between Egypt and Israel. He was also responsible for the safe return of American diplomats during the Iran hostage crisis. After his loss to Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential race, Jimmy Carter did not wallow in his defeat. In 1982, he capitalized on the influence he had as a former president and established The Carter Center, making a commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering. The Carter Center seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health. The Carter Center has been able to nearly eradicate river blindness, trachoma, and Guinea worm disease. By naming ourselves the Carter Class, we are a making a commitment to the NSU community and the world to leave a lasting legacy as productive global citizens.”
