Hello! My name is Avani, and I am Senior SIL for Organic Chemistry 1! I am a Senior in the 3+4 BS/DO program with a major in Neuroscience, and minors in Pre-Health and Health & Wellness Coaching. It was not until I went through Gen Chem 1 in my first semester that I realized that I could help people look at concepts from different perspectives. My peers, educators, and supervisors all told me to apply, and it was one of the best decisions of my life. Being an SIL has changed my college experience and taught me valuable skills for navigating my other positions on-campus. I also have a passion for education. I am the president of ApplyU here at NSU; we provide free college counseling to high school students who may not be able to afford such resources. I’m in the Biology Pre-Dental Track. I’m the SI Leader for Organic Chemistry (CHEM 2410).
SI helped me break out of my shell of relying only on myself to learn. The sessions allowed me to collaborate and become a great teammate of those who are struggling with the course as I was in the same situation of feeling stuck on being able to pass chemistry. For this reason, I joined SI to become a leader and to be the helping hand of those who think they have given up. Wanting the best out of each other and going the extra mile together.

Hi, my name is Arianna Calderon, and I am an SI for CHEM 2410. Currently I major in public health with interest of going down the pre-med track and I minor in both pre-health and art. I chose to become an SI because during my freshmen year, I always admired my past SI leaders for breaking down material for better understanding and being that source of help for students. As a student, I would often end up explaining material to others as my own study benefit but as I continued doing it, I started to enjoy helping others grasp material which then led to my growing interest in becoming an SI
myself. In addition, I hope being an SI would also help me improve my skill of public speaking and explanation. A fun fact about myself is that I am an artist and I love learning how to use different art mediums such as painting and traditional drawing. The art medium that I enjoy most is digital animation, but I am still learning more about it as I plan to further pursue it.

I chose Supplemental Instruction because I recognize the inherent challenges of biochemistry and the significant impact that peer mentorship can have on the learning process. Having experienced the benefits of SI firsthand in courses like General Chemistry II and Organic Chemistry II, I understand the value of consistent practice and non-judgmental support. I believe that having a recent course graduate as a mentor can alleviate stress and facilitate a more effective learning environment. My goal is to provide the same level of support and guidance that proved instrumental in my own academic success. Some fun facts about myself are that I am a Bollywood and hip-hop dancer, and I love the arts in general -- I enjoy singing, playing the piano, and *attempting* to play the guitar in my free time.
