liaison with local clan and village representatives. Despite
apprehension about what the team would find after 20 years,
all model organism groups remained as diverse as previously
known, but in all cases, additional new species were collected.
This demonstrated an amazing diversity of marine taxa in this
relatively small lagoon (3 × 12 km). A typical day in the field
involved diving assignments to various locales in the lagoon
and collecting, sorting, and identifying organisms. While the
future levels of marine diversity in the Madang Lagoon are not
ensured, the expedition team provided a detailed taxonomic
update from which future changes in the system can be
measured and possible social and scientific actions identified
and implemented.
Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystems Research
Wins National Building Award
The Oceanographic Center’s newest building,
the Center of Excellence for Coral Reef
Ecosystems Research won the Design-Build
Institute of America’s National Design-Build
Award. The Center of Excellence was identified
by practices that constituted “design-build done
right.” This award will be presented to the
project members Moss/Miller Associates and
Cannon Design at the November 2013 Design-
