The Institute for Disaster and Emergency Preparedness within NSU's Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine was awarded in 2010 a federal grant, Worker Training Program (WTP), to provide occupational safety and health training for workers in the maritime industry. Project SEAMIST (Southeast Area Maritime Industry Safety Training) was funded by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the National Institutes of Health for five years.
In 2015, IDEP proposed to expand the existing training under NIEHS’s Hazardous Material Worker Health and Safety Training (HMWHST) program. This proposal was awarded in July 2015 which secured funding for another five year period. Project SEAMIST provides hazardous materials worker health and safety training to individuals employed on ships or those working in the marine shipping industry, including oil rig and oil platform workers, port workers, and law enforcement serving maritime venues.
