Grant Funded Projects

The Institute for Disaster and Emergency Preparedness (IDEP) within NSU's Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine has a long history of providing occupational safety and health training for workers in the maritime industry.

  • Project SEAMIST (Southeast Area Maritime Industry Safety Training): Funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) from 2010 to present day, SEAMIST provides training to workers on ships, oil rigs, platforms, in ports, and with maritime law enforcement.
  • Department of Transportation Grant (2022 and 2024): IDEP received additional funding to train instructors in hazardous materials handling. These instructors can then train other workers, ensuring a wider reach for safety knowledge.
