If you have failed to make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) due to extenuating circumstances, you may appeal the denial of financial aid by submitting a SAP Appeal Form within 60 days from the day the failure notice was sent. The appeal must be made in writing, addressed to the Satisfactory Academic Progress Committee in care of the Office of Student Financial Assistance, and include the following documentation:
Completed Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Appeal Form describing why you have failed SAP and what has changed that will allow you to successfully meet SAP in the future
A physician's note if your appeal is based on medical circumstances. In accordance with HIPAA privacy rules, documentation should never include medical records or copies of prescriptions.
Additional supporting documents, if appropriate
Your appeal may be approved on a probationary basis for one semester, as long as it is feasible for you to meet all SAP requirements within one semester. If not, an academic plan must also be included with the appeal.
Late appeals will not be accepted. Generally, the Office of Student Financial Assistance will only approve one appeal per academic degree.
In many instances, you will need to work with an academic adviser to establish an academic plan. The academic plan outlines the grade and credit requirements that will allow you to meet SAP in the future. If you are able to meet SAP within one semester or your SAP failure was based on the quantitative measure (annual credits) alone, an academic plan is not needed and you may submit your SAP Appeal Form without the academic plan portion.
If SAP failure was based on the maximum timeframe measure, you must complete all credits required for degree completion by the end of the last semester of the academic plan, and the degree or certificate must be conferred before you can establish financial aid eligibility for the next period.

Upon accessing the SAP Appeal Form, you will be prompted to enter your name and email address. If your appeal requires an academic plan, you must also enter your academic adviser's name and email so that your adviser may work on the academic plan. Once your academic plan has been completed and signed by your adviser, you will receive an email notification prompting you to sign the academic plan. You must finish the process for your SAP Appeal Form and Academic Plan to be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
Once your SAP Appeal Form has been submitted to the financial aid office, please allow up to three weeks for a response from the SAP Appeal Committee. The outcome of the review will be sent to your NSU email.
Incomplete SAP Appeal Forms will not be reviewed.
