Naushira Pandya, M.D.,

, professor and
chair of the Department of Ge-
riatrics, has been recertified by
the American Medical Direc-
tors Association as a certified
medical director. In addition,
she made a panel presentation
entitled “Impaired Decision-
Making in Older Adults” at the
International Association of
Law and Mental Health annual
meeting held July 15 in Am-
sterdam. Dr. Pandya also co-
authored a paper entitled “The
Burden of Sliding-Scale Insulin
Among Elderly Long-Term
Care Residents with Type 2
Diabetes” that was accepted
for publication by the
Journal of
the American Geriatrics Society
.
In addition, she was named as
a Fellow of the American Col-
lege of Physicians.

OMS-III Alex Pappas
received the Medical Student
Award on July 28 as a part of
the Ophthalmology Section’s
Rabb Venable Excellence in
Research Program for his re-
search project entitled “Success
of Intraocular Pressure Control
in Glaucoma Patients Under-
going Canaloplasty with and
Without Cataract Extraction in
a Single Center Setting.” Pap-
pas presented his research at
the National Medical Associa-
tion’s Annual Convention and
Scientific Assembly in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada.

Therapeutic Value of Mandat-
ed Reporting of Poor Diabetes
Control: The Case of the New

Health’s A1c Registry.”

pointed as director of fac-
ulty development to support
faculty and staff members,
residents, and external visitors
through various interdisciplin-
ary programs, workshops,
resources, and services that
fulfill the college’s mission re-
garding scholarly activities. Dr.
Rana also received a $5,000 ex-
tramural Florida Public Health
Workforce Development grant
from the Broward Regional
Health Planning Council in
Hollywood, Florida.

OMS-IV Erica Turse
at-
tended the American College
of Gastroenterology’s Annual
Scientific Meeting held October
11-16 in San Diego, California,
where she made two presen-
tations based on published
case reports. She singularly
authored the first, entitled “An
Unusual Cause of a Small Bow-
el Obstruction in a 55-Year-
Old Male,” and coauthored
the second, entitled “Imatinib
Resistant GIST: A Rare Case
of Anaplastic Transforma-
tion and Unusual Metastasis.”
Both reports were published
in a special supplement to the
October issue of
The American
Journal of Gastroenterology
.
Student Advocate Association Enjoys
Dinner with the Dean
On August 30, Dr. Anthony J. Silvagni and his wife, Dianna, hosted members from the college’s
Student Advocate Association (SAA)
at their Fort Lauderdale home, which has become an an-
nual
Dinner with the Dean
tradition. “This year’s event was exceptional,” said OMS-II Jason Fau-
cheux, who serves as SAA president. “It was a beautiful evening that allowed medical students,
their family members, and significant others to mingle with the Silvagnis on top of a 24-story
condominium overlooking the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway.”
