Commencement Ceremony

Commencement recognizes and celebrates students' successful completion of their academic programs. Many students, as well as their families and friends, participate in the ceremony as a rite of passage that commemorates the admirable achievement of attaining a college or graduate-level degree.

Chesley B. (Sully) Sullenberger, III Keynote Speaker: Chesley B. (Sully) Sullenberger, III 

Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger, III has been dedicated to the pursuit of safety for his entire adult life. While he is best known for serving as Captain during what has been called the “Miracle on the Hudson,” Sullenberger is an aviation safety expert and accident investigator, serves as the CBS News Aviation and Safety Expert, and is the founder and chief executive officer of Safety Reliability Methods, Inc., a company dedicated to management, safety, performance and reliability consulting.

Born and raised in Denison, Texas, Sullenberger pursued his childhood love of aviation at the United States Air Force Academy. In his graduation year at the academy, he received the Outstanding Cadet in Airmanship Award. In addition to his bachelor’s degree in psychology, he also has two master's degrees, one in industrial psychology from Purdue University and one in public administration from the University of Northern Colorado.

Participation and Criteria


Graduating seniors planning to participate in Commencement should complete the Commencement Participation Form emailed to them from the Office of the University Registrar. Note that the Commencement participation fee does not cover the degree (diploma) application fee. Final instructions regarding graduation will be emailed about two weeks prior to the ceremony to those graduating seniors who submit participation forms and payment.

This year’s Commencement Participation Forms will be emailed to all graduating seniors in March.

Criteria for Marching in Commencement

Students who are enrolled for their 120th credit hour during the winter semester may participate in Commencement unless their academic division determines they will be unable to complete their degree program during that semester.
Final instructions regarding graduation will be emailed only to those graduating seniors who submit their participation forms and payment.
Students scheduled to complete degree programs during the summer may petition to participate in Commencement by completing the following steps:
