Letter from the Editor

We are having another eclectic month at the NSU Alvin Sherman Library beginning with a festive program on May 4th celebrating Asian-Pacific month followed by Circle of Friends Annual Meeting and Board Installation on the 10th. Next, check out a fabulous Artists for Conservation Exhibit, opening on May 17th, which features some of our nation's finest nature artists. On that same day, enjoy a meet and greet with David Diaz, award winning illustrator. Come join us for another spectacular month at the Alvin Sherman Library.

Wags & Tales: Read to a Dog! (Ages 5-12)

Wags & Tales enables children to have fun reading an age-appropriate short story to an Animal Assisted Therapy Dog. The intent of the program is to make reading fun and boost the child’s confidence in reading out loud. Offered in partnership with the Humane Society of Broward County. Live at the Sherman Library! Meet Caldecott and Pura Belpré Award Winning Illustrator, David Diaz (All ages)

David Díaz was awarded the most prestigious illustration honor in the United States-the American Library Association’s Caldecott Medal-for his groundbreaking 1995 picture book, Stormy Night. Since then, Díaz has illustrated numerous award-winning books for children. This program is sponsored by the Charles P. Ferro foundation.

This documentary follows three young men over four eventful years: through basic training and a 2009 deployment to an explosives unit in Afghanistan; to visits with their families while they are overseas; and the rocky return home, without commentary. Winner of Traverse City Film Festival Best U.S. Documentary & Philadelphia Film Festival, Jury Award, Best Documentary Feature. Running Time: 91 minutes. (DNA) Genetics and Genealogy

Speaker and Nova Southeastern University Farquhar College Professor Emily Schmitt will offer valuable information regarding DNA and why it is a valuable tool in ancestral research.

The Genealogical Society of Broward County meets monthly at the NSU Alvin Sherman Library on the first Sunday of every month. Meetings begin with an open lab from noon to 2 PM followed by a board meeting and program. Meetings are open to the public.
