Promoting a Healthier NSU

Nova Southeastern University is committed to fostering a healthy and supportive environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. NSU has implemented a comprehensive tobacco-free policy, prohibiting smoking and the use of all tobacco products across all university facilities, including education centers and vehicles. This policy reinforces our dedication to the well-being of our community and ensures a cleaner, safer campus for everyone.

Smoking and tobacco use are prohibited in all Nova Southeastern University facilities and on all university property and other properties owned or leased by the University with no exception. This includes, but is not limited to, all indoor and outdoor areas and properties. Indoor areas and properties include, but are not limited to, all common work areas, elevators, hallways, university-owned or leased vehicles, garages, restrooms, dining areas, employee lounges, conference and meeting rooms, and all other enclosed areas in the workplace. Outdoor areas include, but are not limited to, parking lots, grounds, rooftops, plazas, courtyards, entrance and exit ways, and any other areas of the university campus.

Also, smoking and tobacco use is prohibited within personal vehicles when on any property owned or leased by Nova Southeastern University.

For purposes of this policy, “smoking” is defined as inhaling, exhaling, burning, carrying or possessing any lighted tobacco product, including cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, and any other lit tobacco products.

For the purposes of this policy, “tobacco use” is defined as the personal use of any tobacco product, whether intended to be lit or not, which shall include smoking as defined above, as well as the use of an electronic cigarette or any other device intended to simulate smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco, including snuff; chewing tobacco; smokeless pouches; any other form of loose-leaf, smokeless tobacco; as well as the use of unlit cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco.

Policy Application

This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, volunteers, consultants, contractors, and visitors and extends to all facilities occupied or controlled by Nova Southeastern University, including education centers located in the state of Florida and throughout the United States. Smoking and tobacco use is also prohibited in all university-owned or leased vehicles, including but not limited to, Public Safety vehicles, Physical Plant vehicles, the Shark Shuttle, and golf carts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Smoking on all NSU property, including in cars parked on the property, is prohibited.
You will need to leave the university property or campus in order to smoke or use tobacco products.
As a member of the NSU community, you may approach a person and politely inform/remind them of the Tobacco-Free policy and ask them to discontinue their use. Persons who do not feel comfortable approaching a person violating the policy may report their concern of a policy violation to NSU Public Safety, the Office of Human Resources, or the Office of Student Affairs; whichever is deemed most appropriate.

This policy can be found in both the student and employee handbooks. Enforcement procedures and corrective actions will be in line with any other violation of student or employee policy.
