NSU University School Viewpoint Fall/Winter 2017

12 n NSU UNIVERSITY SCHOOL Upper School junior Ryan Kuttler was introduced to photography through a middle school elective course and received his first camera the summer before eighth grade. Initially interested in postproduction editing using software programs, he took advantage of every oppor- tunity to challenge himself on assigned projects. Kuttler decided to try his hand at sports photography and, on his own time, covered NSU University School’s football, baseball, basketball, and volleyball games. At the urging of his teachers, he entered some of his photos into photography competitions and had great success. He earned a prestigious Scholastic Gold Key and honorable mention awards, and won an Orange Bowl photography contest after submitting a gallery of 10 photos. USchool’s marketing department has even used Kuttler’s impressive photos for some of their print and web/media advertising. After following the Dolphins lead photographer on Twitter for a while, Kuttler decided to inquire if he needed a second photographer at the games. Before he knew it, he was interviewing with the lead photographer and was offered the opportunity to come onto the field and test his skills. He now works with the Miami Dolphins, has access to the playing field, shadows the lead pho- tographer, and is happy to add photography intern to his impressive résumé. “Having this opportunity to learn from the Dolphins’ photography team is a dream come true.” Kuttler said. In fact, a number of his photos have been featured on the Miami Dolphins’ social media pages. Certainly an entrepreneur, Kuttler created a website, kuttlerphoto.pixieset.com , to showcase his photo galleries. The site also features South Florida Sauce, a recruitment tool he started with four friends that—through highlight videos, video editing, and photography—helps high school athletes get recruited by college teams. Interested in journalism and business, as well as con- tinuing to hone his photography skills, Kuttler’s future is certainly bright. He has his sights on the University of Michigan, his parents’ alma mater, where he plans on spending his time exploring all of his interests. n UPPER SCHOOL Ryan Kuttler Views the World Through His Lens
