NSU University School VIEWPOINT Spring 2019

MIDDLE SCHOOL 7 ESPORTSCLUB LEVELSUP Each week, members of the Middle School Esports Club gather after school in the Innovation Lab to discuss strategies for their upcoming tournament. To improve their game, this team won’t be hitting the field, the court, nor the gym. The sharpness of their skills relies on their minds, eyes, and fingertips. Their chances of winning the tournament depend on their ability to think and act as a cohesive team. During game-play competition, the students communicate and interact with one another, demonstrating exceptional critical thinking and leadership skills. Innovations in game design and platforms have increased opportunities for students to participate in team-based sports, just not in the traditional way. The world of esports is international, competitive, and a challenge for those who excel at multiplayer online gaming. Coached by USchool teachers Zachary Banks, M.S., and Justin Sheehan, M.S., the Esports Club teaches members to explore advanced strategies while promoting good sportsmanship and the comradery of a team. Esports requires critical thinking and teamwork, as each player must support one another to succeed. Communication and coordination are critical, as well. “Playing competitive video games requires students to think strategically andwork as a team as they put forth their best efforts as individual players,” said Banks. “For many students, it offers the best of both worlds.” Our esports teams have played against other high schools on the east coast as far north as New York. To date, they have had much success and are well-ranked in their respective leagues. “The future for our esports team members is bright.,” Banks added. “Students who are interested in esports frequently go into STEM careers because they’re already interested in game design, computer programming, and video production.”
