NSU University School VIEWPOINT Spring 2019

23 ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS JOSHUA LIEMER C L A S S O F 2 0 0 1 After graduating from NSU University School, Joshua Liemer went on to study film and video at the University of Michigan. Following his studies in Ann Arbor, he worked at ESPN and ABC, where he honed his craft of TV production. Today, Liemer runs his family’s company, VISTA Worldlink, a global leader in transmission and production services, provisioning cutting-edge and creative production packages. Providing TV production solutions since 1988, VISTA Worldlink is a pioneer, bridging traditional production techniques with emerging technologies to serve clients like ESPN, A&E, Major League Soccer, National Football League, and WWE. The company produces thousands of live entertainment and sporting events around the world. This work relies on a production technique called Remote Integration (REMI) that enables a large majority of the production footprint to be executed downstream, away from the originating venue and handled at VISTA Worldlink’s broadcast facility in Dania Beach. “Due to our volume of events, we have become known as a training ground for aspiring producers, directors, editors, and on-air talent,” Liemer said. “We have been extremely successful aligning with colleges like the University of Miami, Florida State University, and the University of North Carolina.” Liemer often recognizes how USchool helped form his future. Even now, at Liemer’s almost 20-year anniversary with USchool, he sees how the demanding curriculum energized his drive for success, how the community service requirement helped sculpt his role in the South Florida community today, and how the staff will always remain in his memories. “USchool is a family,” Liemer says, “and what is more important than family?” As a way to give back to his high school alma mater and provide a unique opportunity for current USchool students, Liemer recently created a TV production internship for our Upper School students. Through this internship, students who are interested in gaining real-world experience in TV production have the opportunity to learn about the different roles within the field of TV production; the balance between the technical execution and creative editorial; how content is produced, distributed, and archived; and how to work with raw television feeds. Providing a glimpse into this fast-paced industry is a win-win situation, as it allows USchool students an opportunity to observe and contribute to the challenging TV industry. VISTA Worldlink aspires to mentor the next generation of broadcast professionals, as the industry needs talented, young individuals.
