NSU University School VIEWPOINT Spring 2019

11 UPPER SCHOOL As part of the fellowship program, the Law Fellows visit NSU Law’s practice courthouses two to three times each month to take part in various sessions. Fellows have met the dean of NSU Law, received an overview of the state and federal court systems, learned how the appellate court system operates, practiced the mechanics of persuasive writing and assembling a case brief, and collaborated on an assigned moot court problem and discussed relevant precedent cases. “Students have the unique opportunity to dive deeply into their interest in law and to potentially ignite a professional and personal passion for it. Through this fellowship, our students are making important contacts and will leave with a portfolio of their work,” said Samantha Nelson, director of experiential learning. Our students recognize how much they are learning and maturing from the fellowship experience. “This fellowship is meaningful to me. So far, I’ve learned to successfully create and use legal methods and arguments to improve my writing and speaking ability,” said junior Jack Flairty. He concluded, “It allows me to better my future and help me achieve goals that I would have never thought possible without it.” Junior Grace Rivero shared, “This fellowship has given me the opportunity to exploremy interest in law, while having the opportunity to learn from NSU Law students.” As part of their culminating project, the Law Fellows were given a Supreme Court case dealing with Constitutional Law and privacy issues and were asked to write a brief. The briefs were edited under the guidance of Heather Baxter, J.D., NSU professor, and the NSU Law student mentors, then submitted to Clinton Hough, M.A., USchool Upper School history teacher, for feedback and comments. After participating in information sessions on oral advocacy and argument, the Law Fellows delivered their brief during a final presentation where they argued their positions in NSU’s mock courthouse. We look forward to next year, when some of the inaugural cohort members will choose to mentor our next group of Law Fellows.
