NSU University School Viewpoint Spring 2018

18 DWC Fellows also attend on-campus events such as the NSU Leadership and Multimedia Conference and visit off-campus industry sites. In early March, they had the opportunity to go on an exclusive, three-hour tour of the WPLG Local 10 news station. Laurie Jennings, four- time Emmy Award–winning evening anchor and USchool parent, and David Lang, USchool class of ’99 alumnus and executive sports producer, led the tour. Jennings and Lang walked DWC Fellows through a day in the life of a journalist, showcasing the complexity of the news station. The group witnessed news in action and left the station inspired and in awe of the talent they observed. Throughout the fellowship, students blogged reflections of all their experiences, wrote feature pieces documenting LLI volunteers’ life stories, and filmed interviews with the volunteers, which will be shared with the volunteers and Fellows’ families at a celebration in May. “The DWC fellowship has given me the opportunity not only to experiment in different areas of communication and broadcast journalism but also to apply skills that will help me in every area of my life and future,” sophomore Cami Maionica said. “It has given me a head start to find my passion and has made me excited about what is to come.” Written by Whitney Lehmann, Ph.D., NSU CAHSS Department of Writing and Communication UPPER SCHOOL David Lang (’99) and Laurie Jennings lead NSU University School students on a tour of the WPLG Local 10 news station.
