NSU University School Viewpoint Spring 2018
UPPER SCHOOL 17 Ten Upper School students who dream of a career in communications are getting a head start with the newly launched Careers in Communication Fellowship. The fellowship, formed through a partnership between NSU University School and the Department of Writing and Communication (DWC) within NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), provides select students with the opportunity to learn about future careers in communication, including digital media production, journalism, and strategic communication. “This is a promising partnership that exemplifies NSU’s commitment to experiential learning,” said Shanti Bruce, Ph.D., professor and chair of the NSU CAHSS DWC. Experiential learning is a cornerstone at NSU University School, and unique fellowships such as this one, as well as the recently launched Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine Fellowship program, have been developed to provide students with one-of-a-kind opportunities to explore their interests. “We are thrilled that our students will receive the unique ability to gain hands-on experience and industry skills in an array of communication careers,” said Jaimie Crawford, associate director of the Upper School. The collaborative effort, which also involves the Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) and NSU’sOffice of Student Media, offers students the chance to engage in a variety of communications- related learning activities, such as attending and participating in communication courses offered by the NSU CAHSS DWC; working with the campus television station, newspaper, and radio station; producing videos with the LLI; and taking part in writing workshops facilitated by NSU communication faculty members. “We are excited to provide this immersive experience to NSU University School students so that they not only see firsthand but also experience the variety of skills and multimedia projects that a communication major develops,” said Megan Fitzgerald Dunn, Ph.D., associate professor of communication with the NSU CAHSS DWC. “Students will get to experience everything from a class in social media to working with communication professors and student media to craft their own multimedia stories.” NSU UNIVERSITY SCHOOL DEPARTMENT OF WRITING AND COMMUNICATION FELLOWSHIP AT ITS FINEST Experiential
