In helping students prepare for their futures, Gruberg felt that community service was an integral part of their growth and development. Forever service-minded, Key Club—whose motto is “Caring, our way of life”—is particularly close to Gruberg’s heart. The high-school organization is dedicated to developing students as leaders in their schools and communities through service. Gruberg served as a Key Club adviser for many years and was acknowledged by the national Key Club Association as the longest continuous adviser for Key Club International. He also proudly received the William O. Hamilton Key Club Award, an award given to the top Key Club adviser in New York, twice during his tenure. Key Club was so important to Gruberg that it led to the establishment of the Dr. Cy Gruberg Key Club Endowed Scholarship in 1993. Additional honors he received include the naming of June 3, 1983, as Cy Gruberg Day by the county executive of Westchester County in New York; 2004 Volunteer of the Year at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Florida; and a recent induction into the Broward County Senior Hall of Fame. Gruberg also served in the United States Army Medical Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. Throughout his career, Gruberg wrote thousands of recommendation letters. But on the eve of January 11, 2000, he had the much greater task of writing his own letter of retirement, no easy feat. “This is where I have always felt comfortable, energetic, enthusiastic, and secure,” Gruberg said of his time spent at USchool. His letter of retirement begins, “September 1949, with a recently received advanced degree, a twenty- two-year-old young man arrived at Wellington C. Mepham High School, North Bellmore, Long Island, for his first teaching position. Thus began this wonderful adventure in education.” Gruberg said, “Counseling thousands of secondary school students has been challenging and fulfilling. I have always said that the student must have implicit confidence that there is an adult—with professional integrity—to whom they can interpret themselves.” Gruberg’s expertise and ongoing support of NSU University School and its students will be remembered for years to come as members of USchool’s guidance and college counseling team continue to work side by side with students and their families in the Dr. Cy Gruberg Center for Guidance and College Counseling. In honor of Gruberg’s dedication to USchool and his generosity, a second scholarship was recently established in his name, the Dr. Cy Gruberg Endowed Scholarship for Academic Excellence, Community Service, and Character, to provide additional financial support to students who excel academically and show civic leadership. William J. Kopas, Ed.D., head of school, said, “Over the years, Gruberg has laid the groundwork for our Guidance and College Counseling Department through his tremendous contributions. I would like to thank him for bringing his passion, intellect, insight, experience, and resources to our school.” Cy Gruberg, Ph.D., withWynne Avellanet, director of Parent andAlumni Relations From left, Mike Oligmueller, M.A., director of college counseling; Cy Gruberg, Ph.D.; and William J.
