THE NSU UNIVERSITY SCHOOL COMMUNITY Members of the NSU University School community gathered in early March to honor Cy Gruberg, Ph.D., and to celebrate the recent naming of the Dr. Cy Gruberg Center for Guidance and College Counseling. Gruberg, a revered counselor, mentor, and friend, was the director of college counseling from 1984 to 2000. Many USchool alumni were in attendance. “I enjoyed building relationships with my students and developing their confidence in me as their counselor,” said Gruberg. “They knew that anything that transpired between us would be held in the strictest confidentiality.” Gruberg still keeps in touch with many of his prior students. Alumni recalled his kind demeanor, great sense of humor, and nurturing disposition. Shawn Snyder, class of ’99, said, “I can recall vividly so many moments from the high school to Harvard journey, and at every significant turn, you [Gruberg] were a part of them all. All these years later, that likely remains the most high-strung I’ve ever been in my life and perhaps the most self- doubting, but your calming and confident hand guided me through.” Born in Kingston, New York, Gruberg received his B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. in Guidance and Counseling. He also completed additional graduate courses at Teachers College, Columbia University, and New York University. After serving as the director of Pupil Personnel Services and Guidance at Hastings-on-Hudson High School, as an assistant professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz, and in the admissions office at Columbia University, Gruberg was appointed director of college counseling for NSU University School (formerly University School of Nova University) in December 1984. What was supposed to be a one-semester stint before returning to his position at Columbia University turned into a tenure of more than 15 years. “Counseling is not advice-giving pep talks and lectures,” Gruberg said. “It’s an art that takes training, academic expertise, understanding, and practice. When working with students on college guidance, often someone may see Cy Gruberg, Ph.D., establishes the Dr. Cy Gruberg Center for Guidance and College Counseling and the Dr. Cy Gruberg Endowed Scholarship for Academic Excellence, Community Service, and Character.
