Page 25 absences may also lead to the suspension of extra-curricular activities (athletics, arts, academic competitions, etc.). There are a variety of ways that excessive absences can be made up: academic study halls, additional assignments/assessments, community service, or more. Seniors with excessive absences will lose senior privileges, including senior prom and Grad Bash, until attendance make-up is satisfactory. A middle or upper school associate director serves as chairman of the Attendance Committee, which is composed of a representative group of staff and faculty members. The committee will review excessive absence reports and develop an attendance makeup plan for each student who has excessive absences. The conditions of the plan must be met in order for the student to regain his/her credit for coursework. Attendance makeup plans for the second semester must be completed before final exams at the end of May. Students will not be permitted to participate in extracurricular activities. • Students will be subject to dismissal from clubs and organizations. • An after-school detention may be assigned for every absence after the 10th absence per semester. • Seniors with excessive absences will lose senior privileges, including senior prom and Grad Bash, until attendance make-up plan is completed. • Seniors are allowed four non-chargeable college visits. Juniors are allowed two non-chargeable college visits. Each visit must be accompanied by official documentation to show your presence at the college. Exceptions must be approved by the director or the director’s designee. Early Dismissal/Partial-day Absence Parents are strongly discouraged from permitting students to leave school early, especially when students will miss scheduled assessments. Students who are in school at least 4 hours on a specific day may participate in curricular or extracurricular activities (including sports, forensics, theater, music, drama, and awards assemblies on that morning, afternoon, or evening). Students who need to leave school during a school day • must send a note from their parent or guardian, or parent must make a phone call or send email to the attendance office by 8:20 a.m. The parent must indicate clearly the reason for dismissal and the time the student is expected to return to school. The attendance office will then issue an early dismissal pass. • must check out through attendance office at departure time must wait for transportation in attendance office Failure to follow check-out procedures will constitute skipping school and result in disciplinary action. If a test or quiz is missed because of any tardy or early dismissal, the student must make arrangements to make up the test or quiz on that same day or at an alternate day designated by the teacher. Students returning to school during the day must check in through attendance office. Partial-day absences related to medical appointments must be properly documented with appointment cards or slips. Extended Student Absences Families should not plan family vacations or trips during student attendance days. Nonetheless, if such a trip is planned, parents should realize that extended absences may adversely affect their child’s academic performance. • It is the student’s responsibility to complete any work missed during an extended absence. • On their return, students must follow the test make-up policy for missed assessments. • Teachers will not reteach the material to students absent on extended absence. For extended medical leave, individual arrangements will be made through the guidance office. • Parents of Lower School students who wish to take academic work with them during an extended absence, will allow teachers an appropriate amount of advance time (approximately two weeks) to prepare lessons or activities for a student who will be absent over an extended period. • Home instruction and/or tutoring may be required by the school at parent/guardian’s expense when a student has exceeded 15 consecutive absences.
