Fiscal Year 2018 had great activity in the area of external funding, with total cumulative active awards of $107.7 million. Equally significant is NSU’s classification as a research university with “high research activity” by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. NSU’s pursuit of sponsored funding is going strong and trending upward. More than 200 research projects are currently underway at NSU including studies on anti- cancer therapies, chronic fatigue syndrome, autism, coral reef restoration, stem cells, disorders that cause blindness, and wildlife DNA forensics. Moreover, many of NSU’s sponsored projects include significant collaborations with other universities, hospitals, and community organizations on a national and global level. This progress in growing our research capacity is critical as we undertake new initiatives that will forever change the face of NSU. We are making strategic efforts to pursue cross- and multi-disciplinary research. Collaboration and Translational Research are essential characteristics of our plan for the future. Our Research Institutes and Centers are home to NSU researchers from all of our campuses using the latest technologies to work with innovative businesses looking to make their next discoveries at NSU. For instance, recently, NSU partnered with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings to create a program whereby NSU research scientists will create coral reef nurseries and help with restoration efforts in the Bahamas at Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island. Coral reefs are vital for the overall health of the marine environment. Our Center for Collaborative Research (CCR) provides fertile ground for researchers across our great university and throughout the world to have access to state of the art core facilities with the highest quality scientific equipment and expert staff to support cutting-edge research. Our belief in the importance of innovative research and superior scholarship is the foundation for expanding our vision with heightened research infrastructure. Basic, applied, clinical, and commercial research are all essential fundamentals to enhance the student’s education experience, attract highly qualified faculty, grow the clinical practice, and translate research for the good of the public. We continue to learn from one another. As we look toward the future, I truly believe that in 2019, the best is yet to come! H.
