Murphy’s induction ceremony will air on CBS, BET, MTV, VH1, MTV2, BET HER and LOGO, and Maxwell and Jazmine Sullivan will perform during the live ceremony. Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, told the Associated Press, “To this day, Eddie Murphy’s work continues to bring joy and laughter to individuals around the world, and he is an amazing example of Black excellence, creativity, and artistry.” Murphy will become the first person inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame since 2014, along with Cheryl Boone Isaacs and Paris Barclay. Uber and Lyft create database of abusive drivers Transportation companies Uber and Lyft have begun a collaborative effort to create a database of abusive drivers to prevent sexual assault and other crimes against customers. Drivers for both companies will now be undergoing a “sharing safety program” headed by HireRight, a company that specializes in background checks. Chief legal officer for Uber, Tony West told the Associated Press, “Lyft and Uber are competitors in a whole lot of ways, but on this issue of safety, we completely agree that folks should be safe no matter what platform they choose.” NYC prosecutor in Trump investigation will not seek reelection With Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.’s term coming to an end this year, Vance has announced that he will not seek reelection. Eight candidates are on the ballot for nomination for the Democratic party to elect Vance’s replacement in the coming months. The criminal investigation of former president Donald Trump will be one of the first cases for the new district attorney at the beginning of the next year. Global news, courtesy of The Current Desperation in Myanmar There have been several rallies and protests in Myanmar since February, with military forces responding to these rallies violently by using live ammunition to disperse demonstrators. Since the coup began, 50 people have been killed and many have been injured. Reporters from Myanmar stated those killed include a 14-year-old, a 17-year- old and a 19-year-old. The UN called for a United Nations Security Council meeting where representativeswill continue to discuss if there is need for an intervention. Royal family interview Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke andDuchess of Sussex, had a revealing interview with former talk-show host and celebrity Oprah Winfrey on March 7. The tell-all interview gave insight into Markle’s struggles while being part of the royal family. Racism, the relationship with the crown and mental health were the main talking points, all three of which highlighted the lack of protection that Markle’s family was going through. Markle stated that concerns toward her son’s color of skin, targeting from the media, and constant pressure of her service made her contemplate suicide China and Russia sign space agreement Last Tuesday, China and Russia signed a memorandum of agreement to collaborate on lunar missions, including the possibility of setting up a research station on the moon or in orbit. Neither China nor Russia have given details on their plans, but China’s National Space Administration stated that both sides agree to, “use their accumulated experience in space science research and development and use of space equipment and space technology to jointly formulate a route map for the construction of an international lunar scientific research station.” Although China and Russia are theonlycountries tosignthememorandum, both countries explained clearly that they are open to all interested partners. “Justice for Diego” 100 days have passed sinceDiegoArmando Maradona’s death.TheArgentineworld soccer star was in recovery after having recently undergone brain surgery before he passed away.According toCNN, prosecutors claimed that the home-care and medical supervision following was “‘absolutely negligent.’” On Wednesday, March 10, Argentines filled the streets in search of an answer about said negligence in the death of their number “10.” NY Congress members call for Cuomo’s resignation Last Friday, multiple members of New York’s congressional representatives called for Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s resignation following allegations of sexual harassment and groping, as well as for the misreporting of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes. A majority of New York lawmakers have called for his resignation, as well as half of the Democratic congressional delegation of New York. Both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have stated that they support the investigation of the allegations against Cuomo. Stay up to date with national events.
