College students have had to reschedule plans and traverse a new world of helping and caring for family and friends. As if you ever needed an excuse for a spa day before, you have one now. Here are my top five tips on how to have the ultimate dorm spa day on a student budget and be safe while doing it. Shower bombs Who said that we have to give up the experience of Instagramming our favorite bath bomb just because we don’t have a bath in our room? The answer we have all been looking for is here – shower bombs. All you need to do is turn on your showerhead and drop the shower bomb onto the floor not too close to the drain so it doesn’t dissolve too quickly. With vibrant colors and delicious scents, you are guaranteed a fizzing fun time. You can easily purchase them at Lush or even on Amazon. Set the mood Candle alternatives are another thing we didn’t know we needed and is very convenient with the no candle in the residence halls rule. LED strip lights or faux candles are a great investment in getting the authentic spa day experience. If you’re looking for a good smell without the burning of a candle, a fragrance diffuser smells great and also has added aromatherapy benefits. The list is endless for the benefits of different essential oils, but lavender is great for relaxation. Finally, turn up the volume on a spa music playlist to truly set the mood. Face it This one is a giveaway for the essentials of a spa day, but no matter what your skin type is, there is a face mask for you. Online shopping is always your friend, but for those of you who are feeling creative, there are many ways to make your own exfoliator or face mask simply by opening the cupboard. Using ingredients like coffee granules, oats, sugar, cinnamon, olive oil, honey, lemon and sugar, you can make your own DIY spa day essentials that will leave your skin feeling alive and fresh Drink up Make sure to stay hydrated throughout your spa day; it will help your skin absorb the products you use better. By: Daniella Rudolph Contributing Writer Getting crafty for the first time By: Nyla Whyte Contributing Writer If you are anything like me, you haven’t crafted much of anything outside of school posters and presentations, like science fair projects and creating a cell out of materials at home. Crafting isn’t just for kids though; it can be a great outlet for expression and it can help you get more in touch with your creative side. With everything going on in the world right now, we could all use a fun distraction. Here are some things to include in your crafting starter kit. Paint Putting paint to canvas can be quite therapeutic. Whether your art has a specific subject or flows freely, you’re bound to feel a sense of accomplishment upon completing your piece. Watercolor and acrylic paints are super adaptable and easy to work with. Dimensional paints are also useful for painting on less conventional surfaces. Construction paper Paper may seem like a no-brainer in crafting, but don’t doubt its significance. Paper is an integral element of almost every craft. Think of it as a building block. Even the most complex origami sculptures started from a piece of paper. Don’t forget your paper! Lanyard string and beads Lanyard string, also known as plastic lace, is a plastic string material that is more durable than fabric string. It can be used to craft keychains, wall ornaments and more. Because of the multitude of colors available, plastic lace when paired with beading allows crafters to create personally customized handmade jewelry. Other resources Feel like getting creative, but don’t know where to start? If you’re not feeling particularly inspired, you can always look to the internet for assistance. For all crafters, new and experienced alike, Youtube is a great resource. There are a plethora of videos to choose from, all with step by step instructions and visuals to guide you. Pinterest is also a great site to garner inspiration from. No matter how you plan on getting crafty, it’s always a great way to get creative and unwind, especially in times like these.
