The Current 2020

Oreintation 2020 | nsucurrent.nova.edu 9 Sports NSU RecWell: A mind-body cultivation In my first year here at NSU, the odds were if I was not eating, sleeping, in class or working, I was at the RecPlex. The RecPlex has quickly become my favorite spot on campus, whether it be for the pool, rock climbing wall, basketball courts (my absolute favorite) or the gym to hit the weights. As a college student, we experience a lot of stress, both mentally and physically. NSU’s RecWell program has something for everyone to decompress, work on themselves and have fun. I’ve always been a hooper; basketball has been my go-to sport for as long as I can remember. College is time to explore different activities and get out of your comfort zone a bit; RecWell offers group classes to do just that. Intramural and club sports are also offered, including basketball, softball, volleyball, flag football and even bowling. If you were to tell me a year ago that I would be doing yoga every Tuesday and Thursday, I would’ve thought you were crazy, but it’s one of the many activities I’ve taken up sponsored by the RecPlex. Group classes are offered by the RecWell program for those who are new to fitness or simply like working in a group for extra motivation.Whether you’re interested in strength training, cardiovascular work, stretching or even meditation to relax your mind, you can easily find something that will catch your interest. There are 16 group classes offered right now that work with your schedule; if you want to do a spinning class at 6:15 a.m. because that’s the only time that works for you, then you can. Even on the weekends, classes like Yoga Flow, Circuit Blast and HIIT hour are offered. The weekend is when many college students have large amounts of homework and can’t find time to workout, but these classes are short and sweet, giving students the opportunity to workout in the morning before going about their busy day. Finally, you are able to get certified training in both scuba diving and rescue, which I found to be one of the coolest aspects of the program. For any medical students, having a dive and rescue certification can be a huge plus to your resume. The best part of all RecWell activities? They’re all free for NSU students! Becoming a fan: NSU’s sports teams NSU has a wide variety of sports teams and all of them consist of talented players who work hard to make NSU proud. While the university hosts many different events throughout the year, the sports games are some of the best. Being a first time or even returning student, it can be hard to keep track of all the teams and games, especially if you’re not a student athlete yourself. Luckily, there are some places you can check to see what is happening, when and how you can go out and support NSU’s sports teams. How to find them While you may only be hearing about games from word of mouth or emails, you can actually find the composite sports schedule for the NSU sports teams online. It’s as easy as going to nsusharks.com and the calendar is found under the “Inside Athletics” section. With this handy dandy website, you can not only find out when games are happening, but you can learn about the different NSU sports teams and just how amazing they are. For example, the women’s swimming team were named champions at the Sunshine State Conference in 2020 and an NSU men’s basketball player was one of only eight seniors in the entire country to make the NABC Division II All-Star East roster. How to follow them It’s important for students to not only know about the games, but to support the teams. The best way to support your favorite NSU sports team is to follow them on social media and attend their games. Bring signs for your favorite players or for the whole team, and wear your favorite Shark gear that can be purchased from any of the NSU stores on campus or online. After you’ve decided which games you want to attend, you’ll need tickets. Tickets can be purchased directly from the Don Taft University Center box office. The box office is located right next to the RecPlex, directly in front of the main entrance. While most tickets are free for students, some events do require an entrance fee or paid ticket. All you have to do to get a free ticket to a game is bring your NSU ID, better known as your SharkCard, and show it to the employee working the doors. They will hand you your ticket and voila, you can go and enjoy the game! PRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM A. LOPEZ Sideline view of the NSU Baksetball Team By: Sofia Gallus Arts & Entertainment Editor
