2  NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY Aabbreviations, acronyms, and initialisms Abbreviation is the umbrella term covering words or phrases that are truncated for easier reference. Unless an abbreviation is very well-known to the audience (such as USA), the word or phrase should always be spelled out on first use, with the abbreviation/acronym/initialism following in parentheses. The abbreviation does not need to be added unless it will be used again in the same story or collateral piece. If not, then just spell out the term when it is mentioned. Abbreviated words are simply shortened versions of words. • vol., prof., etc. In some cases, symbols can also be considered abbreviations when they stand in for words or phrases. • @, ©, ® Acronyms are terms created from phrases and read as words. Usually, the first one or two letters of each major word is used. Some acronyms can trend into words, at which point, their spelled-out version is rarely used. • NASA, scuba, radar Initialisms are terms created from phrases read as a series of letters. Usually, the first letter of each major word is used. • NSU, FBI, NFL, USA Simply shortened/abbreviated forms of words take periods. Acronyms and initialisms do not. There are exceptions to this, such as U.S. and academic degrees, both of which take periods in NSU style. Articles (a, an, the) are rarely used before acronyms, but are often used before initialisms. In all other cases, including when multiple types of advisers are mentioned, the -er suffix is used.
