7 2021 NOMINEES FOR NSU Cocurricular Adviser of the Year Jose A. Rey, Pharm.D.—College of Pharmacy Jose A. Rey, M.S., Pharm.D., BCPP, is a professor at NSU’s College of Pharmacy. His most rewarding experiences have been advising and mentoring students at NSU for 29 years. Rey believes that his greatest contributions to NSU have been advising two great student organizations and teaching. Student-centered accomplishments include establishing the nation’s first student-governed and award-winning Collegiate Chapter of the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists at NSU, which serves NSU’s students and community through awareness campaigns and educational programming addressing mental illness. Rey is also the proud adviser for Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, another award-winning and diverse graduate student organization, providing a platform to create opportunities for success by ensuring academic excellence, professionalization, leadership, scholarship, and philanthropic service to the community. Michelle Manley, Ph.D.—Division of Student Affairs A three-time graduate of Nova Southeastern University, Michelle Manley has been associated with NSU in one form or another since 2002. She received her bachelor’s degree in legal studies in 2004, her master’s degree in conflict analysis and resolution in 2007, and her Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2018. She is currently the assistant dean of student development for the university and is passionate about developing students and helping them achieve their personal, academic, and professional potential. Michael Deneus, M.S.—NSU Orlando Campus Michael Deneus has been with NSU for the past three and a half years as the assistant director of student affairs for the regional campuses. He currently serves as the adviser for four different SGAs at four different regional campuses (Orlando, Palm Beach, Jacksonville, and Puerto Rico). He also serves as the campus student affairs professional for each campus, which allows him to support other regional campus organizations. In addition to his role as an employee, he is currently enrolled in the doctorate program at the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. He plans on one day becoming a dean of students. Heather Baxter, J.D.—Shepard Broad College of Law Heather Baxter has been a professor of law at the Shepard Broad College of Law since 2007. She teaches Legal Research and Writing I and II, Criminal Procedure, Appellate Advocacy, and the Judicial Field Placement class. She serves as the faculty adviser for the Moot Court Honor Society and the Florida Association of Women Lawyers (FAWL) Student Chapter. As adviser for these prestigious organizations, Baxter mentors students and helps them develop strong programming. In addition to advising the organizations, Baxter serves as the coach for several Moot Court travel teams. Her students have been very successful in competitions, and many serve as role models and mentors themselves as a result of the professor’s guidance. She considers the students to be the best part of her job.
