Nova Southeastern University | 15 DOCTOR OF SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY (SLP.D.) INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY SYSTEM THE COHORT CONCEPT The SLP.D. program is a hybrid program that represents an innovative, practical, and realistic approach to doctoral studies. A new cohort consisting of 5 to 10 speech- language pathology professionals who live and work in a variety of settings is devel- oped once a year. The cohort is intended to serve as both an administrative and edu- cational vehicle for the program. This arrangement provides opportunities for sharing the expertise of individual cohort members and fosters professional dialogue. The delivery of classes provided to each cohort includes formal instruction through • hybrid (face-to-face/online) courses • online-only courses • a live summer institute Instructors of hybrid courses teach from NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. Students are provided with videoconferencing software, allowing them to hear and view the instructor and class online. Students participate in faculty member-directed independent reading and writing assignments online between class meetings. APPLIED DISSERTATION The applied dissertation is a detailed, accurate, and cohesive account of a scholarly investigation designed to answer a research question directed toward the improve- ment of practice in the field of speech-language pathology. Research is distinguished by a theory-to-practice model encompassing a diversity of disciplines. Each student is assigned a faculty committee to facilitate and supervise the process. SUMMER INSTITUTE During the first summer in the program, all students are required to attend a week-long SLP.D. summer institute held at NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. Did You Know? There are three benchmarks in the completion of the applied dissertation: (1) the concept paper; (2) the proposal; and (3) the dissertation final report.
