NSU's Overall Case Statement | Realizing Potential Campaign

15 Serving THOSE WHO SERVE NSU actively supports military service members and their families. Along with connecting student-veterans to our medical and psychological resources and conducting cutting-edge research for veterans’ health and well-being, NSU offers special financial advisers, legal services, workforce retraining, and even an aviation program for veterans. NSU’s Shepard Broad College of Law launched South Florida’s first Veterans Law Clinic, offering much-needed pro bono help to U.S. veterans and active-duty military personnel living and working in the tri-county area. Student veteran John Saindon, D.H.Sc. , is a perfect example of NSU’s dedication to serving our nation’s veterans and active service members. Saindon’s commitment to academics led to a Doctor of Health Science degree from NSU in 2010. But unlike most students, he earned his doctorate while fighting in a war. He studied every night after working 10- to 12-hour days, 7 days a week, maintaining the environmental health of 20,000 soldiers stationed across Iraq. Now a health scientist specializing in informatics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Saindon recalls receiving his degree at the Al-Faw Palace in Baghdad. “It was quite an honor to serve and receive recognition for academic excellence. There’s no greater honor than to wear the uniform of the United States Army, accompanied with the prestigious NSU regalia.” —John Saindon, D.H.Sc.
