PERSPECTIVES • WINTER/SPRING 2013 34 Alicia Fernandez-Fernandez, D.P.T., Ph.D.(c), PT , assistant professor, presented her abstract entitled “Covalent IR820-PEG Diamine Nanoconjugate for Imaging and Hyperthermia” at NanoFlorida 2012 held September 28-29 at the University of South Florida in Tampa. PRESENTATIONS The American Physical Therapy Association’s Annual Combined Sections Meeting was convened in San Diego, California, in January 2013. The PT Program’s alumni reception, which is held annually at the conference, was open to NSU PT alumni and faculty members from all three of its programs—Entry-Level, T-D.P.T., and Ph.D. Multiple PT faculty members from both the Fort Lauderdale and Tampa campuses had projects accepted for presentations at the Combined Sections Meeting. They were as follows: The Effects of Modified Complete Decongestive Therapy for a Patient Status Post Bilateral Mastectomy – Breast Reconstruction and Subsequent Axillary Desmoid Tumor Surgical Excision with Left Upper Limb Lymphedema” Presenter: Kevin Kunkel, Ph.D., assistant professor – Authors: Dr. Kunkel, Kirsten I. Wightman, D.P.T., PT, CLT, and Kathryn E. Roach, Ph.D., PT, associate professor and assistant chair of research, Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “Physical Therapy Complication of Pneumarthrosis and Subcutaneous Emphysema Following Knee Arthroscopy” Presenter and author: Dr. Kevin Kunkel “Using a Curricular Design Model to Convert a Medical Pathology Course from Traditional to Hybrid” Presenter: Lance Cherry, Ed.D., PT, OCS, assistant professor Authors: Dr. Cherry and Mary Blackinton, Ed.D., associate director of the NSU-Tampa Physical Therapy Program “Cardio-Respiratory Response to Treadmill Walking with Rocker Bottom Shoes in Women that Are Sedentary” Presenter: Bini Litwin, D.P.T., Ph.D., M.B.A., director and associate professor – Authors: Dr. Litwin, Andrea Charles, SPT, Tyler Love, SPT, and Ania Szewczyk, SPT. PRESIDENT’S GRANT Debra F. Stern, D.P.T., D.B.A., M.S.M., PT , Leah Nof, Ph.D. , Eva Duchnoski, O.D. , and Kevin Nugent, REMT-P , director of the Department of Emergency Medical Services Education and Training at NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, are actively engaged in a research project entitled “CPR Retention.” Renovated PT Lab: Under the direction of Dr. Richard Davis, CHCS dean, a PT Department task force worked diligently with the university’s architect to design a cutting- edge and technologically advanced classroom and lab. The official ribbon cutting for the new PT Lab occurred in No- vember during the Alumni/Community event in November. Alumni Event: On November 10, during Homecoming Week, the PT Department hosted its SecondAnnual Alumni Reception and Continuing Education Event. All alumni from the Entry-Level, T-D.P.T., and Ph.D. programs were invited as well as community clinical education partners and other PT and PTA members in the community. Interprofessional Activities: The Eighth Annual Inter- professional Diabetes Screening at Miami Lakes Educa- tional Center took place on October 19. This event, which is a partnership between the CHCS and Dade County Schools and involves the PT, PA, Nursing–Kendall cam- pus, and OT departments, screened over 600 adolescents for diabetes and the associated risk factors. In addition, the health care participants provided a variety of educa- tional materials and recommendations for follow-up as in- dicated by screening findings. Diabetes Empowerment: This interprofessional partner- ship between the CHCS and the American Diabetes Asso- ciation allows the Physical Therapy Program to participate in the Diabetes Empowerment program. Dr. Debra Stern is one of the team leaders, with six PT students participating on the interprofessional teams. Community Service Learning: Local projects for the the fall 2012 semester of the PT Program included pediatric hippotherapy in conjunction with CHCS alumni Dehlia Franklin, D.P.T., PT, and Shayhan Franklin Wier, D.P.T., PT. Other activities included balance screenings at the NE Focal Point Senior Center in Deerfield Beach, Florida, pe- diatric screenings at NSU’s annual A Day for Children event, fun fitness screenings with the Special Olympics, open-house opportunities for prospective PT students, and anthropometric screenings at Step Out for Diabetes.
