PERSPECTIVES • WINTER/SPRING 2013 33 Howie Layne, D.P.T., M.P.T ., a CHCS physical therapy alumnus, tweeted live from the 2012 London Olympics and posted updates on NSU’s Facebook page. Dr. Layne, who has operated a physical therapy clinic near NSU’s main campus for 13 years, applied to be a volunteer physical therapist for the Olympics several years ago. After submitting numerous applications and participating in an interview, he was selected by the London organizing committee to serve as a physical therapist during the sports extravaganza. He was assigned to the basketball venue and treated players from the men’s and women’s teams from various countries. PHYSICAL THERAPY • FORT LAUDERDALE Alicia Fernandez-Fernandez, D.P.T., Ph.D.(c), PT , assistant pro- fessor, defended her dissertation at Florida International University in November 2012. Her dissertation is entitled “IR820 Conjugates for Theranostic Applications.” We expect to be celebrating her suc- cess in achieving her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering in 2013. Nelsia King , B.A. , program support coordinator in the Physical Therapy Department, was recognized by the College of Health Care Sciences for her outstanding work in the T-D.P.T. Program and to the department. Howard Layne, D.P.T., PT , a 1998 NSU alumnus, recently pro- vided PT services at the Olympics in London and was cosponsored by the College of Health Care Sciences. He also served as a fea- tured speaker at the PT Department’s Alumni/Community event on November 10 during Homecoming Week. Ovidio Olivencia, D.P.T., PT , instructor and clinical faculty mem- ber, recently completed his post-professional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Brian Russ, PT, FAAOMPT , recently left clinical practice and joined the physical therapy faculty full-time and is currently pur- suing his post-professional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. PT-FORT LAUDERDALE FAMILY: Updates ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Howie Layne During the past year, four PT faculty members received Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults (CEEAA) certification from the American Physical Therapy Association Section on Geriatrics. With the changing worldwide demographics, NSU’s Physical Therapy Program and its faculty members are committed to inte- grating geriatric education into the curriculum, with all students receiving a minimum of 213 contact hours in geriatrics. NSU served as a host site for the three intensive courses and test- ing required for certification. Mary Blackinton, Ed.D., PT, Leah Nof, Ph.D., PT, Debra Stern, D.P.T., D.B.A., M.S.M., PT, and Melissa Tovin, Ed.D., PT, qualified for this prestigious achieve- ment with 60 other U.S. physical therapists. Dr. Stern also serves as the physical therapy representative for the NSU College of Os- teopathic Medicine’s Geriatric Education Center.
