The Jamaica Medical Mis- sion, supervised by Nicole Quint, Dr.OT, clinical faculty member (both trips), and Sandra Winkler, Ph.D., OTR/L, assistant professor (summer). The students pro- vided occupational therapy services for children and adults to improve occupa- tional performance in educa- tion, functional mobility, work, leisure, self-care, and social pursuits. The students gained experi- ence providing developmen- tal screenings, evaluating and treating orthopedic and neu- rologic injuries, and working with the other disciplines to promote interdisciplinary care. Collaborations included working with pharmacy to establish medication man- agement for low-vision and cognitively impaired clients, joining with optometry to ac- climate clients to new glasses and low-vision strategies, and teaming up with public health to educate clients on healthy eating, diabetes man- agement, and exercise for health promotion. The mis- sion promotes transforma- tional learning and opportunities for interdisci- plinary practice, cultural competence, and experience providing continuing medical education presentations. POINTS OF PRIDE: Jamaica Medical Mission M.O.T students Rebecca Solomon and Jenna Rusche provide developmental screenings at a preschool in Westmoreland. M.O.T. student Alexis Lopez performs a developmental screen with a child in Kingston. “The mission promotes transformational learning and opportunities for interdisciplinary practice, cultural competence, and experience providing continuing medical education presentations.”
