48 Fort Lauderdale COMMISSIONING CEREMONY The U.S. Navy held a commissioning ceremony this summer for its newest amphibious transport dock ship, the USS Fort Lauderdale. Meredith Berger, J.D., a 2008 NSU College of Law alumna and the assistant Navy secretary for energy, installations, and environment, sponsored the ship. After giving the first order to “man our ship and bring her to life,” Berger later noted: “The Navy names ships for people, places, and ideas that are special. The Navy certainly picked a special place when naming the USS Fort Lauderdale,” Berger said. “I am honored to be the sponsor for this incredible ship.” TURTLE RELEASE EVENT Holly Lynn Baumgartner, Ph.D., Halmos College of Arts and Sciences dean, together with researchers and volunteers of NSU’s Marine Environmental Education Center, welcomed members of the Susie and Alan B.
