7 Silky Shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) Scalloped Bonnethead Shark (sphyrna corona) DOWNIN THE TROPICS The silky shark research includes monitoring how much time they spend inside vs. outside marine-protected areas, where they are exposed to international fishing. The smallest species of hammerhead shark, the scalloped bonnethead, is now part of the team’s research. The scalloped bonnethead grows to 3-feet long. In contrast, the scalloped hammerhead can measure up to 14-feet long. Both shark species are critically endangered. Fast Fact: Scalloped hammerhead sharks are recognizable by the curved notches at the end of their expanded heads.
