56 FORT LAUDERDALE On November 11, 2022, NSU hosted the Forman Field Dedication Ceremony in front of the William and Norma Horvitz Administration Building. The renamed U.S. Military Service Plaza at Forman Field pays tribute to the family responsible for the land on which NSU now sits. Additionally, a commemorative plaque was unveiled that celebrates the contributions of Charles and Hamilton Forman and honors them as “pioneers for business, science, and education.” On January 18, Donald Michael Remy, J.D., deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, held a Student-Veterans Roundtable with students from NSU, Broward College, and Florida Atlantic University. Joining the deputy secretary were U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, M.A., and George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., NSU president and CEO. The students, who represented the air force, army, and marine corps, posed insightful suggestions and discussed their concerns. On April 21, NSU coordinated the U.S. Army Southern Strike Battalion’s Military Ball and Dining-In Ceremony at NSU’s Rick Case Arena at the Don Taft University Center for South Florida cadets. The festivities included time- honored military traditions, such as cadet skits and a Grog Bowl ceremony. Keynote speakers included Major General Rafael Ribas, deputy commander for mobilization and reserve affairs, U.S. Southern Command; Hanbury; and Lieutenant Colonel Heath Papkov, professor of military science. On April 28, NSU held its inaugural Joint Commissioning and Pinning Ceremony for U.S. Army ROTC cadets, as well as Health Profession Scholarship recipients. Keynote speakers who shared words of wisdom and encouragement prior to the cadets and officers being commissioned and promoted included Matthew Chenworth, M.Ed., NSU senior director of military affairs; Ribas; and Hanbury.
