55 3 Hollywood-Dania Beach CORAL REEF RESEARCH GRANT The Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center received $3.8 million in federal funding for continued coral reef research for its scientists and students. The symbolic check was presented by U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, M.A., at NSU’s outdoor coral nursery on February 14. The funds will be used to support the NSU National Coral Reef Institute’s intensive research into stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), which is devastating Florida’s coral reefs. The research project uses advanced genomic approaches. Proven genome-based patho- gen discoveries, plus analytical algorithms, will serve to pinpoint etiologic agents that trigger and cause SCTLD. BIG THANK YOU LUNCHEON On March 28, approximately 320 participants attended NSU’s Big Thank You Luncheon. The annual event, which is held at the Rick Case Arena in the Don Taft University Center, allows students and administration to honor the multitude of donors who provide appreciated scholarships to NSU students. Donor honorees represent the many generous people who have created endowed and nonendowed scholarships at NSU. These life-changing scholarships enable deserving students to achieve their undergraduate and graduate degrees and further ensure NSU’s growth in teaching, research, service, and learning. During the luncheon, longtime NSU supporters Ron and Kathy Assaf received the inaugural Impact Award “in recognition of the extraordinary impact of their generous scholarship gifts to Nova Southeastern University.” Fort Lauderdale/Davie Irving Rosenbaum, D.P.A., Ed.D., M.P.A., NSU Health Professions Division vice president for operations; Holly Lynn Baumgartner, Ph.D., Halmos College of Arts and Sciences dean; Wasserman Schultz; and Harry K.
