Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences teaches dentistry’s medical aspect. T oday’s dentists can assess the multiple linkages between oral and gen- eral health. Yet there are situations that can baffle even the most experi- enced practitioner. “You’re treating people; you’re not only treating teeth,” said Michael A. Siegel, D.D.S., M.S., FDS, RCSED, professor and chair of the Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the NSU College of Dental Medicine. It is in this department, which encompasses the divisions of oral medicine, oral pathology, oral radiology, and orofacial pain, where students are exposed to what Siegel calls the “medical aspect of dentistry.” According to Siegel, “All dental students spend a good deal of time with us.
