Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM)—Department of Nutrition 2024–2025 250 F. Background Checks and Drug Screening The M.S. in Nutrition, Professional Practice Concentration program will follow the college policy for background screening and drug testing as set forth in the KPCOM Student Handbook. Upon admission to the professional practice concentration, graduate nutrition students will be subject to compliance screening requirements for licensed health care providers and may train in facilities where adverse results are monitored. Drug screening will be required prior to matriculation (see the Drug Testing Policies section in the Osteopathic Medicine Program section of this handbook) or at any time during the program where faculty members/administration have reasonable grounds to suspect drug or alcohol use. Drug testing must be performed at a qualified designated laboratory site identified by the college. Students who • test positive on a drug or alcohol urine screen • have a repeated inconclusive and/or diluted drug or alcohol urine screen* • refuse to submit to a drug or alcohol urine screen • demonstrate illegal or disruptive actions related to drug or alcohol use • have an arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia or other illegal possession/use of drugs • have a demonstrated dependence to drugs or alcohol will be referred to the graduate Student Progress and Advising Committee (SPAC) for further action, including the evaluation of potential violations of the KPCOM Code of Behavioral Conduct. Should a student have a valid prescription for the medication, it will be reviewed by KPCOM prior to making the decision to refer the matter to the SPAC. Please note that NSU’s Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Policy prohibits the use and possession of marijuana regardless of whether a valid prescription exists. *In the event of an inconclusive or diluted test result, the student will be required to submit to an additional urine drug screen within 24 hours of the inconclusive/diluted result. Should the repeat test be inconclusive and/or diluted, the student will be placed on an administrative break in enrollment until such time as they can present a negative drug and/or alcohol screen and will be referred to the Student Progress Committee for review and possible disciplinary action. G. Disciplinary/Termination Procedures Information in this section is provided as a supplement to the Code of Conduct and Policies and Procedures for Alleged Code of Conduct Violations sections. Matters under this section are managed through the Graduate Student Progress and Advising Committee (SPAC). Refer to the Academic and Curriculum Policies and Procedures section for more details. The program reserves the right to discipline or dismiss students for infractions of established policies and procedures.
