KPCOM - Student Handbook 2024-2025

Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM)—Osteopathic Medicine Program 2024–2025 149 All students must have the capacity to manage their lives and anticipate their own needs while observing KPCOM’s Code of Behavioral Conduct and NSU’s Code of Student Conduct and Academic Responsibility. A violation of these standards is an abuse of the trust placed in every student, and could lead to suspension or dismissal. B. Academic Dishonesty The college holds its students to the highest standards of intellectual integrity. Therefore, the attempt of any student to take any examination by improper means, present work that the student has not performed, or aid and abet any other student in any dishonest academic act or having direct knowledge of such without reporting it, may subject the offending student to a meeting before the SPC and subsequent dismissal from the college (see Policies and Procedures for Alleged Violations of the Code of Behavioral Conduct section in this handbook). C. Attendance 1. For M1 and M2 Courses of Study Attendance is mandatory for all laboratories, small group learning activities, interactive learning activities, clinical activities, and other special announced events. The college reserves the right to require attendance at other designated lectures and presentations, as well as dean’s hours. Students will be notified via NSU email of any announced mandatory class or meeting no less than one school day prior to any mandatory session, whenever possible. If a student is absent for a mandatory class session, it is the responsibility of the student to contact the KPCOM Office of Preclinical Education at preclinsupport@nova.edu either prior to the session or within 24 hours of the missed session. The student must supply the KPCOM Office of Preclinical Education with written documentation for the reason the student was not in attendance at the session. If a student is absent for a required session that is not a part of an existing course, it is the responsibility of the student to contact the assistant dean of Preclinical Education (preclinsupport@nova.edu) either prior to the event or within 24 hours of the missed event. The student must supply the assistant dean of Preclinical Education with written documentation for the reason the student was not in attendance at the outside-of-class event. The assistant dean of Preclinical Education will notify the student as to whether the absence is excused or unexcused. The Office of Preclinical Education or the Office of Clinical Education along with the involved course directors will notify the student as to what makeup assignment, if any, is required. Failure to complete any assigned makeup work in the time frame given may result in the student being referred to the SPC. The following are considered excused absences for required sessions: a. d eath and funeral in the immediate family (spouse, partner, parent, grandparent, in-law, sibling, child, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew) b. p ersonal illness, only when diagnosed and documented in writing by the physician who evaluated and treated the student at the time of the absence (physician may not be a family member)
