Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM)—Osteopathic Medicine Program 2024–2025 138 5. Virtual Rotations The only approved virtual rotations will be • Pediatrics II (in lieu of a live rotation if desired) • one elective rotation in the fourth year, approved by the Office of Clinical Education • any virtual rotation assigned by the dean or the Office of Clinical Education 6. M3 and M4—Rural and Urban Underserved Medicine Rotations a. M3 Core Rotations All OMS3 students will participate in two four-week blocks of medically underserved community rotation experiences. All students will be assigned by the Office of Clinical Education to the Rural and Urban Underserved Medicine clinical rotations to KPCOM-affiliated locations. There will be no exceptions to these assignments. Housing will be provided by the Department of Rural and Urban Underserved Medicine for core rural rotation assignments greater than 65 miles from the students’ core campus. All students will receive a financial stipend for each in-person core rural rotation to defray expenses, no matter where their assignment is located. b. M4 Selective Rotation The third core requirement for rural or urban underserved medicine rotation will be taken as an M4 selective rotation and must be in a primary care discipline with few exceptions being considered (see criteria below). No stipend or housing expense costs are provided to students for the selective experience. Students may seek out rural or urban medically underserved experiences throughout the United States and abroad for the selective rotation. Strict criteria for selective rotation approval must be met for the rotation to be sanctioned by KPCOM. When considering sites for approval, the following criteria are considered: • The site is an active medical education training site affiliated with a D.O. or M.D. medical school, but cannot be a KPCOM-established Rural and Urban Underserved Core Rotations site. • The physician supervising the KPCOM student has an active faculty appointment at a COCAaccredited osteopathic medical school or LCME-accredited medical school or be approved by the KPCOM Credentialing Committee, and is an experienced medical educator. • Priority will be given to sites that are designated federally qualified community health centers, county health departments, or Area Health Education Center (AHEC) sites. • The selective rural rotation can be in a rural/urban underserved hospital, inpatient or outpatient. • A physician’s specialty certification and clinical experience will always be reviewed prior to approving the rotation. Selective rotations at core sites will not be approved.
