Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences—Department of Occupational Therapy 369 The mission of the Dual-Degree Postprofessional Doctor of Occupational Therapy (Dr.O.T.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program is to empower future leaders in occupational therapy through a continuous degree program, cultivating expertise in both the art of clinical practice and the science of research. NSU aims to produce graduates who seamlessly integrate the scholarship of practice with traditional research methodologies, enabling them to address practical needs, innovate solutions, and contribute substantively to the evidence base of occupational therapy. Through this unique blend, the dual-degree program aspires to advance the profession by producing trailblazers committed to elevating occupational therapy through continuous learning, evidence-driven practice, and impactful research. This is the first program of its kind. It requires a capstone project, 62 credits, and one additional semester more than the typical Ph.D. curriculum, all while tailored for the working professional’s lifestyle. The program develops graduates who will stand out as experts in advancing the practice of occupational therapy and the field itself. Our graduates will meet the needs of the everchanging healthcare landscape as occupational therapy shifts to entry-level doctoral programming. Dual-Degree Dr.O.T./Ph.D. Program • 62 total combined credits – 34 credits completed in the Dr.O.T. program – 28 credits completed in the Ph.D. program • Dr.O.T. degree awarded after completion of – required on-campus midsession events (including attendance at Capstone Consortium) – OCT 7910 (Capstone I) and OCT 7920 (Capstone II) – capstone residency – presentation • Ph.D. degree awarded after completion of – required on-campus midsession events –successful passing of the Ph.D. qualifying exam – dissertation – successful dissertation defense Dual-Degree Postprofessional Doctor of Occupational Therapy (Dr.O.T.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Both the Dr.O.T. and the Ph.D. courses are taught through distance learning, with on-campus events. Transition from the Dr.O.T. portion to the Ph.D. portion requires recommendations from both the Dr.O.T. and the Ph.D. program directors. Admissions Requirements (Dual-Degree Dr.O.T./Ph.D.) 1. Applicants must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in occupational therapy from a regionally accredited university or college and be eligible to practice as an occupational therapist within one year of initiating the program. If the applicant’s bachelor’s degree is in occupational therapy, then the applicant’s master’s degree may be in any field. International applicants must present the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree and evidence of successful completion of an OT educational program approved by WFOT. 2. Applicants must meet the minimum requirements listed below. • GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale • graduate-level research methods course (typically taken as part of the student’s entry-level M.O.T. or O.T.D. program) • master’s degree 3. Applicants must demonstrate writing proficiency, as determined by the program director. 4. International applicants also must have a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 or higher for the written test or 213 or higher for the computer-based test, an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0, or a Pearson Test of English—Academic (PTE—Academic) score of 54. 5. All students will be required to have a computer that meets the recommended minimum specifications. The dean is empowered to evaluate the total qualifications of every applicant and to modify requirements in unusual circumstances.
