296 Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences—Department of Anesthesia Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Pre-Anesthesiologist Assistant Studies The Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Pre-Anesthesiologist Assistant Studies considers the overall quality of its applicants looking at academic achievement, personal motivation, life experience, and recommendations. Admissions Requirements • Prior to matriculation, applicants must have previously applied to the prior year CASAA application cycle of NSU’s AA program. This verified CASAA application must have been received by NSU by the prior year application deadline. Included in the CASAA application, file applicants must submit – three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant’s prior academic performance, potential, character, work habits, and suitability for graduate study leading into a career in clinical practice submitted to the prior year CASAA – at least 8 hours of documented anesthesia exposure by observation in the operating room, submitted to the prior cycle CASAA – the summary of an article published in a current anesthesia journal submitted to the prior year CASAA (healthsciences.nova.edu/healthsciences/anesthesia /forms/literature_summary.pdf) – résumé (submitted to the prior year CASAA) – copy of valid national or professional certificate or license, if applicable, submitted to prior year CASAA • Applicant must have completed a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university, including above average performance in courses required in a premed curriculum. Applicants must have a minimum verified cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 grading scale. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is preferred. • A pplicants must receive a grade of C or better in all the following prerequisite courses (to meet prerequisite requirements, math and science courses must include sufficient rigor and detail in the discipline; introductory, survey, or business courses will not satisfy the requirements): Required Courses—Cannot Be Survey Courses – English (3 semester hours) – Anatomy and physiology with labs (8 semester hours) – General chemistry I and II with labs (8 semester hours) – Organic chemistry I with lab (4 semester hours) – Biochemistry (3 semester hours) – General physics with lab—trigonometry or calculus based (8 semester hours) – Calculus (3 semester hours) Preferred Courses—Not Required – Cell and molecular biology (3 semester hours) – Organic chemistry II with lab (4 semester hours) – Microbiology and lab (4 semester hours) • G raduate Record Examination (GRE) or Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) scores must have been taken within the past five years and must be taken early enough for official scores to be received by the admissions office from the prior year CASAA application deadline of January 15. Application Process The following application process is required of all applicants: 1. Complete an online NSU Application and submit a $50 nonrefundable application fee. Applications are accepted May 1–July 1 for the upcoming fall semester. 2. Submit verified CASAA from the prior year application cycle with all required documentation, which includes official test scores; official transcripts; three letters of recommendation; 8 hours of documented shadowing; literature review summary; résumé; proof of professional license, if applicable; and TOEFL cBT, if applicable on file. 3. Submit official final transcripts certifying coursework and grades not included in the verified CASAA application. 4. Coursework taken at a foreign institution must be evaluated for U.S. institutional equivalence by an approved National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) organization. A course-by-course with GPA calculation official transcript evaluation is required. 5. Personal interviews are by invitation only and an integral part of the admission process. Not all applicants will be granted an interview by the program; an interview is not a guarantee of admission.
