Pruitt’s assignment was to develop an occupational therapy exercise that will implement play with motor skills development. “This gets us ready and prepared to work in the field. It’s one thing to be in a class, but actually being able to see how things apply is amazingly valuable. Today we’re working on fine motor skills—every child with autism spectrum disorder is different,” said Pruitt. Students from the College of Dental Medicine also get training by working with special needs children at a dental clinic at Baudhuin. “This is another example of how Mail- man Segal sets the future, not only for young children who are in need of these services, but to train pro- fessionals who can take this work out into the communi- ties,” said Leiderman. n Right, Brittany Woodby, a second- year occupational therapy student, is among the NSU students who are taking the techniques taught in the classroom and applying those concepts in a real-world setting. The Mailman Segal Center; the Center for Psychological Studies; the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences; and the Institute for the Study of Human Service, Health, and Justice join to form the Division of Applied Interdisciplinary Studies (DAIS). The center moves to a broad base inclusive of human development and autism across the life span through the establishment of three institutes: the Early Childhood Institute, the Autism Institute, and the Parenting Institute. The name is changed to the Mailman Segal Center for Human Development. The Family Center was renamed the Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies. Jim & Jan Moran Family Center Village opens on the grounds of NSU’s main campus. 2002 2003 2010 2013
