NSU Horizons Spring 2017

Displays inside the interpretive center show nesting habitats and habits of sea turtles found on Florida beaches, tagging and tracking data for sea turtles and sharks, invasive species, coral reefs, and sea turtle rehabilitation. A display also is dedicated to Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs), an important tool in reducing sea turtle deaths and interactions in trawl fisheries (such as the ones for shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico). The Carpenter House was originally built in 1941 by U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Henry Carpenter, who, along with his wife, June, were known for their environmentalism and community service. The Carpenters sold the property to Broward County for preservation and environmental education. In 2010, detailed renovations of the historic house and the accompanying saltwater pool began. “The center’s mission will carry on the traditions of the Carpenters and engage the community to learn about their local environment,” said Glenn Goodwin, M.Sc. , MEEC education specialist. The Marine Environmental Education Center at the Carpenter House is located at 4414 Surf Road in Holly- wood, Florida. For additional information or to schedule a visit, call (954) 357-5125.
