Horizons Fall 2016

2 NSU HORIZONS To the Friends and Family of NSU: This is the most exciting time to be a part of Nova Southeastern University. The new NSU Center for Collaborative Research (CCR) advances our university’s mis- sion of revolutionary research. The 215,000- square-foot CCR is one of the largest and most progressive research facilities in Florida, and will provide NSU’s scientists and researchers from multiple disciplines with a central- ized clinical research infrastructure to foster scientific breakthroughs. Pioneering cell-based biomedical research will be conducted at the NSU Cell Therapy Institute—one of the flagships in the CCR. The NSU Cell Therapy Institute will be an international collaboration with prominent medical research scientists from Sweden’s world- renowned Karolinska Institutet. The CCR also houses the NSU Institute for Neuro-Immune Medi- cine; the NSU AutoNation Institute for Breast and Solid Tumor Cancer Research; the NSU Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research; and the NSU Emil Buehler Research Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The CCR opening dovetails with another exciting time at NSU— the largest externally funded campaign in our university’s 52-year history, which will raise more than a half billion dollars by December 2020. In January, we launched Realizing Potential—The Campaign for Nova Southeastern University , which is firmly underway toward its goal of raising $250 million in philanthropic support for students, faculty members, and 21st-century educational initiatives. We will raise another $300 million for sponsored research, service, and training projects. This issue of Horizons illustrates the importance of the CCR and the advances that the Realizing Potential campaign will bring to NSU. This is a historic time for NSU, and I am proud to serve as president and chief executive officer as we continue to realize the power of our potential. This promises to be another dynamic year for the NSU Sharks. George L.
