CEME • PAGE 30 Florida Department of Health – Palm Beach County The Florida Department of Health – Palm Beach County’s Preventive Med- icine-Public Health Residency program has been in existence for over 56 years and has a long history of developing new and innovative programs to meet the needs of its communities. Resident staff members have the opportunity to par- ticipate in the planning and the implementation of these programs. The residency program at the Florida Department of Health – Palm Beach County offers a valuable learning opportunity to develop and increase physician competencies in public health practice, program planning, and administration in a dynamic and unique agency. The residency program has public health as its primary focus, and covers all aspects of preventive medicine, but our goal is to train physicians to have an understanding of the importance of public health as a component of preventive medicine. We are proud of our partnerships with other community organizations. These partnerships allow us to provide an even broader range of experiences. Mental health, chemical dependency, and community organization are provided to our residents by our community partners. The residency program has an affiliation agreement with Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-COM). Program residents are employed through NSU-COM, and the college is responsible for salary, benefits, and other employer obligations. The Florida Department of Health – Palm Beach County is responsible for all educational aspects of the practicum year, while NSU-COM provides the residents an opportunity to complete their Master of Public Health (M.P.H.), which is a required residency component. The program is open to both osteopathic and allopathic physicians, allowing for enhancement of programs at both institutions. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) sanction this affiliation. Allopathic (M.D.) residents who successfully complete the program will be eligible to sit for the certifying examination given by the American Board of Preventive Med- icine. Osteopathic (D.O.) residents who successfully complete the program will be eligible to sit for the certifying examination given by the American Osteo- pathic Board of Occupational and Preventive Medicine.
