55 Part Three: Presentations Problem Statement Workshop (en Español) Pedro Mendez, Ed.D. , FSE Adjunct Faculty Member and Dissertation Chair, and Professor at Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD/Florida) Tuesday, July 16 8:00–10:00 a.m. Grand Republic B This workshop focuses on assisting students with identifying a research problem, justifying the study, and developing a background and rationale for the problem statement as it relates to the development of a concept paper. Students and chairs will discuss the proposed research topic in terms of research relevance and feasibility. Furthermore, students will work with their chairs to complete either a draft or a final problem statement. Qualitative Data Analysis—Proposal Stage Mary Clisbee, Ed.D. , FSE Director of Program Outreach/Program Professor, North Miami Beach, Florida Charlene M. Désir, Ed.D. , and Elda Kanzki-Veloso, Ph.D. , FSE Program Professors, Applied Research Center (ARC), North Miami Beach, Florida Wednesday, July 17 4:00–5:00 p.m. Fantasia Ballroom E–F Wednesday, July 17 4:00–5:00 p.m. Fantasia Ballroom K–L Wednesday, July 17 4:00–5:00 p.m. Fantasia Ballroom M–N Qualitative data analytic procedures are indicated in Chapter 3 of the applied dissertation proposal. After qualitative data are collected via interviews, focus groups, or open-ended questions on surveys, the researcher must make sense of the findings through a rigorous data analysis process. This workshop will cover a content analysis approach that is practical and that can be used with a variety of qualitative designs. Moreover, the session will provide insight into how to incorporate a description of this method in Chapter 3 of the proposal. The presentation of results in Chapter 4 will also be highlighted. Qualitative Research Design—Proposal Stage Mary Clisbee, Ed.D. , FSE Director of Program Outreach/Program Professor, North Miami Beach, Florida Charlene M. Désir, Ed.D. , and Elda Kanzki-Veloso, Ph.D. , FSE Program Professors, Applied Research Center (ARC), North Miami Beach, Florida Wednesday, July 17 2:45–3:45 p.m. Nutcracker 2 Wednesday, July 17 2:45–3:45 p.m. Nutcracker 3 Wednesday, July 17 2:45–3:45 p.m. Pastoral 1 This session is designed for students who are developing the research proposal and proposing to use a qualitative research design. The session will focus on understanding the definitions of qualitative research, the studies that are appropriate for this type of inquiry, and the various approaches in conducting qualitative inquiry. Students will also be able to distinguish the types of inquiries and research questions that are best suited for qualitative studies. Students will become familiar with generic research designs (e.g., case study) and in-depth designs (e.g., phenomenological). The session’s primary aim is for students to gain an understanding of data generation, data collection, data preparation, and data analysis for qualitative studies.
