Global Leadership, Learning, and Research-Program 2013

46 2013 Conference on Global Leadership, Learning, and Research Part Three: Presentations GENERAL SESSIONS Research is Relevant Presentations These sessions promote scholarly discussions concerning global issues, trends, and best practices in research. Students will gain new insight on cutting edge topics in applied research, as it is relevant in today’s P-20 educational systems. The sessions are designed to highlight excellence in education through collaboration, global analysis, needs analysis, research methodology, data analysis, results, organizational impact, research sustainability, and trending. The application of real-world investigative studies allows doctoral students the opportunity to enhance the knowledge learned throughout their course of study and contributes to the attainment of an exemplary dissertation grounded in empirical research and inquiry. Twitter, a real-time information network, has been set up as a tool for students to communicate with the researchers during the presentations. Simply join the compelling conversation by posing a question and the research moderator will use Twitter to quickly share your questions. LoudCloud and Steelcase each have Twitter accounts assigned to their sessions. They will only work the day of the session and then they will be closed. The accounts are LoudCloud-fseconf1 and Steelcase-fseconf2. LoudCloud Systems, Inc. Raymond Ravaglia, M.A., Member of the Board of LoudCloud Systems, Inc., Associate Dean and Director of Stanford University Pre-Collegiate Studies, and Founder of Stanford University’s Online High School Monday, July 15 9:15–10:30 a.m. Fantasia Ballroom H–J Flipping Your Lid: Using Analytics and Behavioral Insights to Change Online Learning This session will explore how beginning with a set of design principles for analytics in online learning and coupling these with an understanding of behavior, one can shift a student’s learning curve within an online course. This will include how (a) reviewing the technology enables interaction and collaboration throughout the learner’s experience, and (b) collecting the right data and viewing it the right way can be used to conduct an in-depth analysis of engagement and activity within the LoudCloud platform—leading to the identification of predictors of student success. Steelcase Education Solutions, Steelcase Inc. Lennie Scott-Webber, Ph.D., Director of Education Environments, Steelcase Education Solutions, Steelcase Inc., Grand Rapids, Michigan Monday, July 15 10:45 a.m.–noon Fantasia Ballroom H–J Environments Impact Behaviors: Defining Research Initiatives Supporting a Holistic Understanding of Learning Places Environment behavior theorists have evidence that the built environment impacts our human behaviors. New learning settings are being developed and designed and yet metrics are few and far between in this critical area of study. We are also not certain new behaviors are actually being implemented in these educational arenas due to persistent teaching practices. Why is the study of educational design that potentially affects student learning an important research area? What new behaviors should be promoted to reach higher learning outcomes? How does spatial design support them? This presentation will share (1) the importance of this research as a scholarly agenda; (2) a six-step research methods process; (3) issues relative to working in the “real world” and not the Petri dish common in basic science; (4) a construct that can support a holistic understanding of the complexity of studying this type of settings; and (5) an approach to “scaling” research on a global platform.
