2024 NSU Fact Book

2024 FACT BOOK 85 M.D. PROGRAM The college’s M.D. program is taught in conjunction with other NSU and HPD colleges, using renovated space to accommodate M.D. students and the college’s active-learning curriculum. Developed by a team of more than 100 expert medical educators, physicians, and researchers, the college’s innovative curriculum is designed to train and develop master adaptive learners and physician leaders who will transform healthcare. The collaborative, inquiry case, and problem-based curriculum also integrates topical threads on ethics and humanities, interprofessional collaboration, biomedical informatics, business, and leadership. Additionally, the curriculum includes a heavy emphasis on biomedical research, technology, and medical innovation throughout the educational program. Medical students will become active learners through work in small groups using active inquiry methods under the guidance of a faculty facilitator. Students will be challenged to solve real-world medical problems using clinical cases and a team-based approach. The integration of these innovative pedagogies will facilitate better interaction with patients and other health care team members. Further, these encounters will teach necessary skills during clinical rotations and residency training, as practicing physicians, for leadership roles, and to uphold excellent standards of care. After meeting core preclerkship requirements, students will enter clinical rotations halfway through their second year, providing additional real-world training. Students will participate in clinical rotations throughout HCA East Florida’s network of hospitals, at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, and, eventually, at the HCA teaching and research hospital on NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. Research is a core mission of the college, and students will complete required research courses and will have additional elective opportunities to expand their research portfolio with the support of faculty mentors. M.B.S. PROGRAM Reflecting the college’s growth trajectory, M.D. faculty members in the Department of Biomedical Sciences are now offering the Master of Biomedical Sciences (M.B.S.) Program. The M.B.S. program is a postbaccalaureate enhancer and pathway designed to respond to a changing healthcare market to make students more competitive for admission to the university’s professional colleges in the Health Professions Division. Through a truly interdisciplinary curriculum, the M.B.S. program offers a variety of clinical and business-related courses. In summary, the Dr. Kiran C.
