On-site classes are offered in the evening, with each class generally scheduled one evening per week. An orientation is scheduled prior to each semester and is required for both online and on-site students prior to matriculation into the program. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 to remain in good academic standing. Graduating students have the opportunity to participate in a commencement exercise in May of each year. An exit survey must be completed prior to graduation. The Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Master of Science (M.S.) in Biomedical Informatics degree has grown extensively since its inception in 2006 and is now recognized as a leading program in both national and international arenas. The 44-credit program is designed to train future leaders in the development, dissemination, and evaluation of information technology as it relates to the health care environment, such as hospitals and health systems, health information technology sys- tem vendors, e health companies, insurers, pharma- ceutical companies, and academic institutions. This is done through a combination of required core courses (31 credits) and elective courses (12 credits) to yield a diverse and fundamental program of study. With its focus on clinical informatics, the program’s curriculum emphasizes the areas of computer science and its clinical applications in medical informatics, management, and program evaluations in health information technology. This innovative program uses both on-campus and online formats to enable working professionals to earn a master’s degree in biomedical informatics without career disruption. The program also offers graduate certificate courses (18 credits) in public health informatics and medical informatics. The Master of Science (M.S.) in Disaster and Emergency Management, established in 2012, is a 36-credit degree program. The degree program is designed to provide students with the requisite theoretical knowledge and applied skills needed to work in the rapidly growing interdisciplinary field of disaster and emergency management. A community research practicum at the local, state, federal, or international level also is a key component of the program. Several degree tracks are offered, includ- ing maritime safety and security, cybersecurity, law enforcement/criminal justice, and public health. The program content is offered exclusively online and incorporates interactive, live video through technology platforms to engage distance learners from all over the globe. The mission of the Master of Science (M.S.) in Nutrition is to develop a cadre of interprofessional leaders for a global society who integrate and promote the role of nutrition in a dynamic and changing society. The program is designed to further the professional competencies in critical thinking and ability to solve problems in the nutritional sciences. To meet growing demands in preventative services, the innovative curriculum prepares graduates to promote health and well-being throughout the life course by applying knowledge of human metabolism and nutrient functions, assessment techniques, and emerging evidence to inform practice. Students are required to attend orientation at the beginning of the program and present their final project results at the end. All graduates are invited to participate in spring commencement. The rich, interprofessional platform of NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Health Professions Division provides a collaborative learning environment for this area of study. The M.S. in Nutrition (at least 30 credits) is offered fully online or in a hybrid format with select courses offered on campus. Students take a required core of 21 credits, including an applied capstone course near the end of the program. They can finish a generalist program with a minimum of three elective courses (9 credits) or may choose to concentrate their electives (12 credits) in sports nutrition, community nutrition, or functional nutrition and herbal therapy.
