Patel College of Allopathic Medicine was established in 2017 as the eighth medical school in the populous state of Florida granting the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. The college received Preliminary Accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in October 2017 and matriculated its charter class of 53 students in July 2018. In January of 2018, the college was renamed the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allo- pathic Medicine in recognition of a substantial gift from the Patel Family Foundation to support student scholarships. NSU’s M.D. College is matriculating its fourth class of students and is considered for Full Accreditation by LCME. In lockstep with NSU’s vision, the college is committed to becoming a preeminent medical school through a strong focus on academic medicine’s tripartite mission of excellence in medical education, research, and patient-centered care. The college enjoys strong institutional and community support and has successfully partnered with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) East Florida and its hospital network to provide excellent student training experiences in clinically relevant settings. HCA will soon open a 200-bed teaching and research hospital on NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. It will be within walking distance of the university’s educational and research facilities, including NSU’s 215,000-square- foot Center for Collaborative Research, which houses the majority of the NSU M.D. College’s research faculty. M.D. PROGRAM The college’s M.D. program is taught in conjunction with other NSU and HPD colleges, using renovated space to accommodate M.D. students and the college’s active-learning curriculum. Developed by a team of more than 100 expert medical educators, physicians, and researchers, the college’s innovative curriculum is designed to train and develop master adaptive learners and physician leaders who will transform health care. The collaborative, inquiry case, and problem-based curriculum also integrates topical threads on ethics and humanities, interprofessional collaboration, biomedical informatics, business, and leadership. Additionally, the curriculum includes a heavy emphasis on biomedical research, technology, and medical innovation throughout the educational program. Medical students will become active learners through work in small groups using active inquiry methods under the guidance of a faculty facilitator. Students will be challenged to solve real-world medical problems using clinical cases and a team-based approach. The integration of these innovative pedagogies will facilitate Colleges and Academic Centers
