24 | Dental Medicine ADVANCED GENERAL AND SPECIAL NEEDS DENTISTRY Highlights • The goal of this one-year certificate is to provide the oral health practitioner with the skills to treat patients with special health needs such as ♦ those resulting from a range of developmental disabilities ♦ acquired disabilities ♦ chronic, complex medical conditions • Didactic and clinical training prepare postgraduate students for patient evaluation and assessment of a patient’s health and his or her cognitive and mobility status. • The expectation is that students will become comfortable with, and proficient in, assessing patients’ abilities to withstand and participate in their own care, while providing services to patients with a range of intellectual, physical, or behavioral challenges. Students’ knowledge and patient-management skills are gained through an advanced, multidisciplinary approach, working primarily with CDM faculty members, as well as additional resources in NSU and at affiliated programs and sites. POSTDOCTORAL PROGRAMS PROGRAMS AND COURSES, continued ADVANCED EDUCATION IN GENERAL DENTISTRY (AEGD) Highlights • The residency program is based in two eight-chair clinics at the North Miami Beach Campus. • The optional second year is devoted primarily to special needs dentistry. • The didactic part of the program includes ♦ a core science curriculum, designed to give all postdoctoral students an advanced, interdisciplinary education ♦ a detailed, general practice curriculum • Off-site rotations are often included to expand the range of experiences available. • Professional liability insurance is provided.
