164 College of Dental Medicine (CDM)—Master of Dental Science Certificate Program 2024–2025 Unexcused Absences from Lecture Sessions Only For each course, unexcused absences will be treated as follows: • first unexcused absence/semester—no grade penalty • second unexcused absence/semester—5-point deduction in final course grade. For letter grades, this deduction will result in a lower letter grade, accordingly • third unexcused absence/semester—10-point deduction in final course grade. For letter grades, this deduction will result in a lower letter grade, accordingly • fourth or more unexcused absence/semester—automatic course failure with a grade of F Unexcused Absences from Laboratory Courses • Attendance to all assigned laboratory sessions is mandatory. • One unexcused absence to a laboratory session—Missing a laboratory session based on an unexcused absence is considered unprofessional behavior and will be addressed in the following manner. A written report of the student’s behavior will be completed by the course director and reviewed with the student in the presence of the department chair or designee. In addition, the student will receive a 10-point deduction to the final course grade if the course is a numerically graded clinic rotation or laboratory course, or a full letter grade deduction if the course is graded on a letter grade basis (e.g., B to C). If the course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis, the student will receive a failing grade of F, with a maximum grade of P, after completion of additional assignments, as per the course director. • Two or more unexcused absences to laboratory courses—Missing laboratory sessions based on unexcused absences is considered unprofessional behavior and will be addressed in the following manner. A written report of the student’s behavior will be completed by the course director and reviewed with the student in the presence of the department chair or designee. This will result in referral to the SPC and may result in further disciplinary action. In addition, for courses graded numerically, the student will receive a failing grade of F. Combination Courses (Orientation or One-time Sessions, Preclinical Laboratory Rotations) • Attendance to all assigned class sessions, laboratory sessions, and/or orientations is mandatory. • For courses graded numerically (i.e., from 0–100), one unexcused absence to any of the sessions in the course schedule, of any type, will result in a failing course grade of F.
